RADIATION ONCOLOGY The division of Radiation Oncology continues to have a strong philosophy to education from a broad perspective. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education. One of the staff members currently coordinates all Oncology electives within the centre, and contributes to OSCI and communication courses. Several staff members participate in core curriculum lectures five ; and in supervisory committees for graduate students three ; . One staff member currently is enrolled in the Masters of Postgraduate Education program. Drs Chan, Husain and Angyalfi undertook supervision of 440 courses for University of Calgary medical students. Training Programs: This division has two internal programs, namely Residency and Radiation Therapy. a ; Undergraduate: Radiation Therapy School There are annually three students in this two year program. Oncologists are involved in didactic lectures, and in rotation supervision through simulation. b ; Graduate: No formal graduate science program exists within the division. However several Oncologists participate on supervisory committees for graduate students mainly in Medical Physics. Drs Harold Lau, Corinne Doll, Alex Chan, Peter Craighead all represented the division ; . Dr. Craighead was also an advisor to a PhD student completing her thesis through the University of Swansea. c ; Postgraduate: Radiation Oncology Residency There are seven trainees within the program, and it is anticipated that the first graduate will complete her training in 2006. The committee overall is pleased with the development of training modules, mentorship and integration of research. In 2004 the CARO national award for best poster went to Dr. Kelly, and several other posters were well received at the meeting. Resident award for preceptor of the year went to Dr. Corinne Doll, who also received a clinical teaching award from PARA.

According to NFHS-2, in India only about two-thirds of mothers received ANC during pregnancy, and only 44% received 3 or more check-ups. The above figure has not undergone any change since NFHS-1. Women who did not receive antenatal check-ups are mostly older women, those having high parity, from rural areas, ST, illiterate and poor women. Check-ups during the first trimester were about twice as common in urban areas as in rural areas IIPS, 1995; IIPS & ORC Macro 2000 ; . The effectiveness of antenatal check-ups in ensuring safe motherhood depends in part on the tests and measurements done and the advice given during the check-ups. The NFHS-2 results show that most of these tests were performed at least 1.5 times more frequently for mothers living in urban areas than for those living in rural areas.

FC treatment had no effect P 0.05 ; on vessel wall medial thickness or PCNA-positive SMC at 30 wk compared with CO-fed mice, indicating that dietary vitamin E levels were not related to alterations in SMC proliferative status. Histological findings. No major lesions were found in the thoracic aortas in 20-wk-old mice for any of the cholesterolfree diets tested Fig. 3A ; , indicating that disease progression is dependent on exposure to dietary cholesterol. After the addition of cholesterol 1.25 g 100 g ; and sodium cholate 0.5 g 100 g ; for an additional 10- or 16-wk feeding period, mice from all dietary groups developed atherosclerotic lesions Fig. 3A ; . Representative cross sections are shown in Figs. 3B and 3C. The lesions ranged from multilayered foam cell deposits to fibrous and advanced plaques. This is consistent with previous reports indicating that apoE KO mice develop the entire spectrum of lesion types, similar to humans 16 ; . Although we did not evaluate the effect of dietary lipid on lesion type, immunohistochemical staining indicated that PCNA-positive macrophages were primarily localized to the intimal lesion area. In agreement with previous reports 3537 ; , SMC were predominantly located in the medial layer and in the periphery of atherosclerotic plaques data not shown ; . GLA and n-3 ; PUFA reduced aortic lesion size at 30 wk age, 10 wk after the initiation of cholesterol feeding Fig. 3 ; . Specifically, mice fed CO developed larger atherosclerotic lesions than the PO, FC and FP groups. By 36 wk age, all mice developed large lesions, and no diet-related effects could be discerned. DISCUSSION A growing number of studies suggest that GLA is unique among the n-6 ; family members in its potential to favorably modulate cardiovascular risk factors 37 ; . We previously dem and taxol

Sprang from his early friendship with an old colonial woman who claimed descent from a line of Salem witches that Cotton Mather had failed to exterminate. Spare always alluded to her as Mrs. Paterson, and called her his "second mother". She had an extremely limited vocabulary composed mainly of the fortune teller's argot, yet she was able to define and explain the most abstract ideas much more clearly than could Spare with his large and unusual vocabulary and tazorac.

Activation, additional remodeling and finally cardiac death, Figure ; . Modern pharmacologic interventions are directed to check or block this excessive neurohormonal activation in an effort to delay, arrest or hopefully reverse the cardiac remodeling process. The neurohormonal systems that are activated in heart failure are best classified based upon their effect on systemic vascular resistance. 1. Changes that Increase Systemic Vascular Resistance: Sympathetic Nervous System SNS ; : There is direct evidence that increase in central sympathetic nerve outflow occurs in patients with heart failure and is associated with an increase in plasma norepinephrine. In general, the greater the activation of SNS, the worse the prognosis. Increased sympathetic activity increases peripheral vascular resistance and results in sodium retention by the kidney. Both appear to be compensatory helping to maintain the blood pressure, but if exaggerated, they contribute to increased stress on the failing heart. Renin Angiotensin System RAS ; : RAS is activated in patients with heart failure. There is a substantial rise in circulating renin, angiotensin II and aldosterone. Tissue RAS plays a critical role in both myocardial and vascular remodeling. A number of factors are responsible for the increased release of renin: Decreased perfusion of the kidney. Increased activity of SNS. Institution of a low sodium diet. Vasodilator therapy and diuretics. Angiotensin II: Angiotensin II A II ; potent vasoconstrictor peptide and also acts upon the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone mineralocorticoid ; , which is a potent sodium retaining hormone. Furthermore, aldosterone stimulates myocardial fibrosis. A II stimulates the SNS, the thirst center and the release of AVP. 2.

Negative balances negative goodwill ; reflecting an anticipated unfavourable trend in the companies concerned are recognised in the balance sheet under deferred income and subsequently in the income statement in line with the realisation of the unfavourable trend. Of negative goodwill not relating to any anticipated unfavourable trend, an amount equal to the fair value of non-monetary assets is recognised in the balance sheet and subsequently in the income statement over the average lives of the non-monetary assets. Goodwill or negative goodwill arising from acquired companies is adjusted until the end of the year following acquisition if additional information about the fair value of assets and liabilities acquired is obtained after the date of acquisition. However, there will be no adjustment of goodwill to an amount exceeding the expectations of future income from the acquiree.
