Carcinoid on-line group who were using Sandostatin LAR. The recommended starting dose for Sandostatin LAR is 20 mg mo. Up to 40% of patients in the study required rescue medication several times a week. Dr. Anthony has shown that 20% to 40% of patients receive doses of LAR higher than the FDAapproved maximum dose of 30 mg mo. Patients receiving LAR doses at 60 mg mo. reported no significant side effects. The optimum antiproliferative effects occur in a relatively narrow range of medication concentration. The upper limit for octreotide dosing is not limited by safety concerns. For this study, patients refrained from using rescue shots for at least 24 hours prior to sampling and fasted overnight and had blood, urine and saliva collected and tested. see the Octreotide Testing 101 article on this page for information on updated testing requirements ; Stable doses were obtained by having no dose changes for 3 or more months. As dose increased, even when corrected for body weight, the saturation levels increased in a linear progression.
