O'Reilly also noted the historic presence of the Williams Lake Indian Band on pre-empted land in the area of Missioner Creek as evidenced by the following statement: West of their present reserve at a distance of 10 miles is the farm purchased by Mr. Pinchbeck from the Provincial Government and which at one time was occupied by the Indians, as is evident by the remains of a number of old winter houses. On this farm and within its enclosures, I have at the request of the Chief marked off no less than seven burial grounds.192 Within the documentary record for this inquiry, there is a draft letter dated June 7, 1881, the day after Indian Reserve Commissioner O'Reilly arrived at Williams Lake. Along with population figures and general information about the First Nation and the surrounding area, there is also a record of a conversation between the "Commissioner" assumed from the content to be Indian Reserve Commissioner O'Reilly ; and Chief William. It reads: William Glad to see you. I will now tell you what is right. All my people are glad. Tommy Hasket said it is just the same as if we saw the Queen. Told them what he came for; the Govt. wishes to act justly & liberally by them, and considers them British subjects as much as white men; that in early days mistakes were made with the land, the Indians were engaged otherwise and did not care for the land, the consequence was the whites pre-empted it; that the Govt. wish to remedy this mistake as far as possible and has purchased a large and valuable tract of land which I about to hand over to them. They must mutually assist in remedying the mistake. That he is here to give them as much land as is necessary for their requirements. That they will have to be reasonable with regard to white mans rights they cannot interfere, they need not therefore ask for any land that has been sold by the Govt, if the land purchased by the Govt should prove insufficient other land will be given to them and also a.
Latin: Asparagus racemosus Asparagus lucidus Sanskrit: Shatavari Chinese: Tian men dong WHAT IT DOES: Wild asparagus root is sweet and slightly bitter in taste and cold in action. It calms the nerves, reduces inflammation and protects and moistens the intestinal and lung membranes. It also promotes fertility and lactation. RATING: Gold SAFETY ISSUES: None known. STARTING DOSAGE: Crude powder: one to two grams two times per day Concentrated dried decoction: 500-100 mg two to three times per day Wild asparagus root is a tropical and sub-tropical thorny, perennial, and tuberous shrub, sometimes growing as high as 20 feet. TAM doctors say the recemosus species calms the nerves, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the heart, brain, and mind. In our clinic we have found it quite effective for increasing breast milk production in nursing women, and also for promoting fertility and nourishing the female reproductive system. We also use it whenever we see chronic inflammation combined with dryness and fatigue. It works well when administered with healthy oils such as those from flaxseed and fish in cases of dryness. A simple Ayurvedic "mental clarity tonic" combines wild asparagus with eggs preferably organic ; . I have made omelettes with the much milder grocery store asparagus, and I almost always note a mild increase in mental clarity over the next few hours not that my brain isn't plenty clear already ; . TCM doctors use a similar form of wild asparagus root lucidis species ; as a Yin tonic to replenish the vital essence, promote the secretion of body fluids, and moisten and nourish the lungs. They also mix it with honey to soothe the lungs and relieve coughs and bronchitis. Research highlights After exposing mice to the carcinogen ochratoxin A OTA ; , researchers reported a significant decrease in the activity of their immune system macrophage cells, especially interleukins activating chemicals ; and tumor necrosis factor TNF, a group of cancer killing chemicals secreted by macrophages ; . Treatment with wild asparagus root significantly inhibited this suppression, as illustrated by increased production of TNF-alpha Dhuley, 1997.

Design new, to better cope with demographic uncertainty, and evaluate their performance with model simulations. Simulation tools will also be applied extensively to find proper magnitudes of policy measures. In the following I give some examples of what we are doing. Future demographics are difficult to predict Although demographic processes are usually slow, they are much harder to predict than many people believe. All kinds of surprises concerning fertility, mortality and migration are possible. There are numerous examples of this. Forecasts made in the 1940s missed the baby-boom in all industrialized countries; post World War II improvements in life expectancy have been underestimated in most industrialized countries; the decline of fertility in the 1990s in the Mediterranean countries was not anticipated by the national forecasters, and migration has taken forecasters by surprise in many European countries such as the Netherlands. During the last 1015 years, demographers and statisticians have quantified the uncertainty in demographic projections. This work is based mainly on previous forecast errors in fertility and mortality, and partly on expert judgment. The results are in the form of stochastic population simulations. I will not go to the technique here. The output is a large number, say 1, 500, of alternative population paths for the country in question. Each path is equally likely, but the concentration of paths shows which areas are more likely than other areas

The choice of the research topic, based on the rationale of the research was motivated in chapter 1. This resulted in the formulation of the research problem and the research question. The aim of the research and objectives were then determined. The nature of the research determined that the qualitative approach would be followed, as a social problem, namely the emotional needs of children in the primary school years, diagnosed with ADHD, was the focus of the study. Applied research was done as a solution was to be found in the form of guidelines to create awareness amongst the parents of the children diagnosed with ADHD, to make them aware of the emotional needs of these children. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fourteen children from the Rietvlei.

Associated with increased methylation of phospholipids are alterations in membrane fluidity, '9 in numbers of binding sites for agonists, 20'2' in activation of adenylate cylase, H and in calcium flux.22 We, therefore, examined the changes in phosphatidylcholine synthesis by the transmethylation in HL-60 cells and stimuthe exogenous choline lated to differentiate.

Applications Currently, a broad number of drugs rely on carbohydrates as key contributors to their therapeutic efficacy for indications such as cancer, infectious disease, arthritis, cardiac deficiencies, and other diseases. Many of these compounds are described in Table 6 pages 21-22 ; . By employing its proprietary technology, Pro-Pharmaceuticals may be able to upgrade several highly toxic chemotherapy drugs through a carbohydrate-based targeted delivery platform. Pro-Pharmaceuticals has focused its drug delivery technology initially on the following widely used chemotherapy agents: 5-FU, irinotecan, doxorubicin, paclitaxel, oxaliplatin, cisplatin, and bevacizumab Avastin ; . There is a market need for improving therapeutic efficacy and decreasing toxicity to achieve fewer side effects. These agents are described below. 5-Fluorouracil 5-FU ; . 5-FU is one of the most effective first-generation chemotherapy agents and has been used extensively to treat various cancers such as colon, pancreatic, and stomach. The chemotherapeutic, however, is highly toxic to various organs within the body. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, cardiovascular damage, mouth sores, gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding, skin darkening, fatigue, and even death. Therefore, it can not be administered to patients for sufficient periods of time or in adequate doses to be clinically efficacious. 5-FU, a fluorinated pyrimidine nucleic acid component ; , works by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and inhibits the formation of RNA. DNA is the chemical inside the nucleus of a cell that carries the genetic "blueprint." RNA delivers DNA's genetic message to the cytoplasm of a cell where proteins are made. Since DNA and RNA are essential for cell division and growth, 5-FU provokes unbalanced growth and death of the cell. The effect of DNA and RNA deprivation is most marked on those cells, such as cancer cells, which grow and absorb 5-FU at a more rapid rate. The compound also diffuses readily across the blood-brain barrier and distributes into cerebrospinal fluid CSF ; and brain tissue. 5-FU is manufactured by Roche Laboratories RHHBY-OTC.BB ; under the name of Fluorouracil Roche, and by SICOR Pharmaceuticals, Inc. now Teva Pharmaceuticals ; as Adrucil for intravenous administration. Irinotecan. Marketed under the trade name Camptosar by Pfizer, Inc. PFE-NYSE ; , irinotecan is a semi-synthetic, water-soluble plant alkaloid, with the primary mechanism of action being the inhibition of topoisomerase I, an enzyme that produces reversible single-strand breaks in DNA during the replication process. Irinotecan is used primarily in the treatment of colorectal cancer and is also prescribed for cancers of the cervix, esophagus, stomach, lung, and pancreas. Known side effects of irinotecan include severe diarrhea, anemia, leukopenia, anorexia, nausea, fever, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Doxorubicin. Marketed under the trade name Adriamycin RDF, doxorubicin is a cytotoxic agent that selectively kills cancerous cells and promotes tumor regression. Doxorubicin acts by binding to the DNA, which presumably inhibits nucleic acid synthesis. Pfizer markets Adriamycin RDF to treat, among other conditions, leukemia, cancers of the breast, ovaries, bladder, stomach, and thyroid, as well as Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. While the drug has demonstrated an ability to address this broad category of metastatic disorders, it has demonstrated high toxicity, resulting in side effects such as nausea, vomiting, loss of hair, mouth sores, colon ulceration, and heart damage. Originally patented in 1971, its patent protection has expired. Paclitaxel. Marketed under the trade name Taxol, paclitaxel is an anti-leukemic and anti-tumor agent that suppresses cell division by binding to microtubules that form in a cell's nucleus to transport chromosomes during cell division. Taxol is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company BMYNYSE ; for intravenous administration and has proven most effective against ovarian carcinomas and advanced breast carcinomas. It is often employed following the failure of standard chemotherapy. Paclitaxel remains under evaluation for the treatment of leukemia, lung carcinoma, colon carcinoma, renal carcinoma, melanoma, and CNS carcinoma. The drug is a highly toxic agent and has demonstrated varying side effects ranging from rashes, a drop in blood pressure, and anemia, to major breathing problems, hives and or fluid build-up near the heart, and bone marrow suppression. Hair loss has also been observed in almost all patients. Pro-Pharmaceuticals believes that there are no patents covering the composition of paclitaxel and carmustine.

Cancerrelated mortality of about 50 percent within 5 years. Mortality is significantly worse in nodepositive patients. These patients die from gastric cancer coming back at the site of the original tumor or as metastatic disease. 10. What are the treatment options for patients with unresectable gastric cancer? Patients with unresectable gastric cancers and no evidence of metastatic disease can be expected to survive 5-6 months without any treatment. Treatment in these patients is geared at control of cancer related symptoms palliation ; . The majority of these patients will experience an obstruction of the gastrointestinal passage by the growing cancer. Resection, bypass surgery or radiotherapy may be appropriate for some patients with obstructive or uncontrollably bleeding lesions. 11. What are some of the chemotherapy drugs that are active against gastric cancer? 5-FU, cisplatin Platinol ; , mitomycin Mutamycin ; , etoposide, and the anthracyclines Adriamycin ; have been used most for several years. The responses seen with single-agent chemotherapy have been traditionally partial and mostly short-lived, with little, if any, impact on overall survival. Recently, several new agents have demonstrated significant activity in gastric cancer. These include the taxanes; irinotecan Camptosar ; . Response rates are consistently higher when combination chemotherapy regimens are used in gastric cancer. Therefore, despite no demonstrated survival advantage, combination therapy has been generally preferred over single agents. A commonly used regimen entails the combination of 5-FU, Adriamycin, and mitomycin FAM. Several different regimens including FAMTX 5-FU, Adriamycin, and methotrexate ; , ECF etoposide, carboplatin, and 5-FU ; , and ELF etoposide, leucovorin, and 5-FU ; have been tested. No combination has demonstrated superiority over any other regimen and camptosar.

SCALING IN SOIL PARAMETERS USED IN PEDOTRANSFER FUNCTIONS Pachepsky, Y. A., Rawls, W.J., Oldak, A., Jackson, T.J. USDA -ARS Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Beltsville, MD 20705, USA ypachepsky hydrolab.arsusda.gov FAX 1-301-504-8931 Soil hydraulic parameters in field-, watershed-, and regional- scale studies are often estimated from basic soil parameters available from soil surveys. Regression equations used for such estimation are called pedotransfer functions. Information about scale dependencies in soil hydraulic properties is essential in the design of measurement systems and descriptions of the land-atmosphere interactions and related hydrologic phenomena. This explains interest in scale dependencies of basic soil parameters used in pedotransfer functions. Our objective was to test the applicability of fractal models to simulate scale -dependent variability of basic soil properties. The Little Washita watershed in Oklahoma, USA, was charac terized with the MIADS soil database in order to determine soil series names for each of 2 200-m square pixels that covered the 46x19 km area. Clay, sand and organic matter contents, as well as cation exchange capacities CEC ; were extracted for each of the soil series from the national soil survey laboratory characterization database. The 200 m grid data were aggregated into 30 different scales, creating new pixels from 2x2 up to 31x31 pixels of the original grid. The Durbin-Watson test was applied to decide what scale range could be used to apply scaling relationships. Soil textural classes ranged from sand to clay in the study area. The log resolution ; vs. log between-pixel variance ; relationships for the four basic soil parameters could be considered linear up to 7 resolution. Scaling exponents for the clay contents and CEC were equal to -0.33 and -0.35, respectively, whereas scaling exponents for both sand and organic matter contents were equal to -0.28. Relating statistical moments about zero to the order of the moments revealed applicability of a multifractal model in the same range of scales. The 2D Markov chains appeared to be satisfactory models to describe the observed variability. The log resolution ; vs. log within-pixel variance ; relationships had at least two linearity intervals between 200 m and 7 km within which fractal scaling could be applied. The results on scaling were sensitive to the procedure of discarding missing data. Work is under way to examine scaling for soil cover in other landscapes and across different ranges of scales and caverject.
